ELECTRON Aerospace’s E5 Electric Aircraft Reaches Major Design Milestone

Dutch aviation company ELECTRON Aerospace has achieved a major milestone in the development of its all-electric E5 aircraft, moving it closer to its planned entry into service by 2031. The five-seat aircraft is now set to enter prototype construction, with first flight targeted for late 2027.

The announcement was made at AERO Friedrichshafen, where ELECTRON confirmed the E5 has passed its Design Concept Review. An external board verified that the design meets key requirements for configuration, weight, performance, and certification planning.

The E5 is designed for regional air mobility and is expected to carry five passengers plus luggage over distances of around 750 km (470 miles) using currently available battery technology. The company also expects future battery improvements could extend its range to around 1,000 km.

With this milestone complete, ELECTRON will now build a full-scale prototype. The aircraft features a simplified design, replacing an earlier canard layout with a conventional low-wing configuration and rear-mounted dual electric motors to reduce certification risk.

Marc-Henry de Jong, Co-Founder and Chief Commercial Officer, said the company is excited to move into the build phase, adding that “seeing is believing.”

The E5 is aimed at short regional missions such as air taxis, business travel, training, and medical flights. However, challenges remain, including battery performance, infrastructure, manufacturing scale-up, and real-world operating economics.
